The Atrangi story?

The vision

Atrangi means ‘unusual’ in Hindi.

During my undergrad, we were expected to come up with a unique design concept as our final year project and that’s when the idea of Typographical furniture first came into being.

The idea was to create furniture and decor pieces that spoke your story. Furniture that could be relatable to you, your style and your identity.

What started out as a school project, turned into a small business within 2 years.

The Devanagari Script (Hindi)

Rani Ki Vav

My inspiration for my first typographical furniture design was a 900-year-old stepwell located in Patan, Gujarat in India.

The Stepwell was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 2014 and it also made it to the 100 Rupee bill in India.

I began by hand drawing inspired parts of the Stepwell into the Devanagari script.

The worn-out look was purposely retained to give it a more realistic and artistic look.

Design wasn’t about perfection but, reflection.

Each letter was then digitised in great detail. Several hours went into retaining the aesthetic of the design. This was the blueprint of the first-ever Atrangi Furniture.

The Process

I wanted to honour the 900-year-old Stepwell and understand its marvel in both, architecture and design.

The intricacies that say the true story of the stepwell would continue in my decor pieces and the main circular architecture, the well, is an essential element in most of the pieces
